Sunday [01.31.10]
![]()
Well, it’s been long while since I last posted a setlist, but my good friend Harold (from onevoiceworship.org) encouraged me to resume the setlist fun. So here we are again. I trust that you have all been well. We’ve been good too and thanks for asking.
We had a good morning set with a smaller, yet very tight team (drums, bass, keys, & 3 singers). This was our setlist today:

Sunday [11.08.09]
Welcome to the Sunday Setlist rundown. I’ll keep this short today (read: taking a nap) as we are starting some special meetings that start today and run until Wednesday evening. It was a good service this morning and we had a rather large crowd, with many visitors in town because of a wedding (for a lovely couple from our church) we held yesterday.
Worship went well, just not as great as I had hoped for. Don’t ask me what would have been great because I don’t have any actual criteria in place to measure this. It was just that feeling that things could have been a little more energetic, more engaged, more dynamic. But mostly, I think people were a little disengaged because we had a guest speaker and they were “curious” what he would be like. The speaker and I talked after service and he agreed that the people were a little reserved today. Regardless of all that, our band did a wonderful job, we enjoyed worshiping together, and here is the set for the day:
1. (F) Most High
2. (D) We Give You Glory
3. (E) Revive Us Again/Show Your Glory
4. (A) Shout To The Lord
5. (A) Agnus Dei
As always, thanks for stopping by and check out Fred McKinnon’s site HERE to see what other churches and teams are doing around the country. Be sure to come check out the free video section on Friday, as we will be posting a new video. Have a great week!
Sunday [11.01.09] – daylight savings fun
All I am going to say is that the technology I live with is now “officially” smarter than I am. We literally awoke (VERY REFRESHED) to the fact that everything we had set back one hour had also automatically set itself back one hour too. So yes, I fell back 2 hours instead of 1 which then caused our band to miss it’s rehearsal time. But even with my technological craziness, we were able to throw a quick rehearsal together in a back room, and worship was still wonderful because we were with God.
Below are our setlists for the day w/ links to iTunes:
- 1 –
1. (F) Forever
2. (Ab) Radiance
3. (Ab) O For A Thousand Tongues To Sing
4. (E) How Deep The Father’s Love For Us
5. (C) I Surrender All
- 2 –
1. (Ab) We Cry Out
2. (B) Glory To God Forever
3. (B) Jesus Paid It All
4. (B) Glorified // Glory To God Forever
5. (C) Let It Rain
If you would like to see what other churches and worship leaders are doing each week, stay on the internet for a few miles, and then take your first left down to Fred McKinnon’s site. Also, if you haven’t take advantage of our video series for keyboard players, come check it out HERE – IT’S FREE! Have a great week!
Sunday [10.18.09] – interactive leading
Our first service today was excellent and I was extremely proud of our team. I have been talking with them lately about the importance of basic movements and being “themselves” while leading worship. Today, they did just that – they walked forward when they were leading a song, made eye contact (with each other and the congregation), smiled, and used their everyday normal expressions/movements to help people engage in worship a little more.
Now, most of you are probably already very expressive, but it has taken us a while to get to the point where we are starting to be ourselves on stage. I do realize that worship is a vertical expression towards an eternal God; however I see on a weekly basis that most people start out by looking “horizontally” at us on stage. For our band, when we are expressionless (or expression-little), it makes it difficult for people to move beyond us and actually ends up drawing more attention to ourselves. All that to say this – I was proud of how they did today and worship was great as a result. I’m curious – what do you do to interact with your congregation(s) and what are your thoughts on the subject?
You can see our setlists for the day (complete with iTunes link to the versions of songs today):
– 1st service –
1. (A) Your Grace Is Enough
2. (Ab) The New Song We Sing
3. (Bb) Fairest Lord Jesus
- Reading of Psalm 145:8-21 into -
4. (C) Doxology//All Creatures Of Our God & King//Alleluia (we do this song with a great rock groove, but this was one of the few correct versions of the song I could find on iTunes)
- 2nd service –
1. (B) Song Of Hope (Heaven Come Down)
2. (B) One Way
3. (F) So Great
4. (C) I’d Rather Have Jesus//How I Need You (awesome song, written by family – Ryan & Charity Long)

This post is part of the sunday setlists fun over at Fred McKinnon’s blog HERE. Thanks for taking a moment to check out what we’re doing here at our church and I look forward to hearing your thoughts.
Sunday [10.11.09]
Wonderful worship, awesome response from the congregation, and our pastor was back preaching again. A very full day for us and it was made even better as we were joined once by guest artist Steve Phillips on the saxophone. Below are the lists for the day (and all links will lead you to examples on iTunes).
The Recap:
We started the day with our rearranged version of “You’re Worthy Of My Praise”. The way we played it gave the song a new rock vibe and people seemed to appreciate the changes. **side note: I might use this song for the video lesson this week, so be sure and check back on Wednesday to hear & see the changes.** That song led nicely into “Everyday” which pulled from both Hillsongs & Lincoln Brewster’s influences. And then we transitioned nicely into some older but deeper songs of worship to end the morning. You can check below to see how we ended our setlist:
-1st service-
1. (F#) You’re Worthy Of My Praise
2. (B) Everyday
3. (G) All Who Are Thirsty
4. (C) Come Thou Fount
5. (C) What The Lord Has Done In Me
-2nd service-
1. (B) Counting On God
2. (C) Happy Day
3. (G) I Have Found
4. (G) Jesus Messiah
5. (E) Lord Of Lords // Revelation Song
Hope your day was great and thanks for stopping by. Make sure you swing by Fred McKinnon’s site to see what other’s are doing in their houses of worship.
Sunday [10.04.09]
I promised last week that I would be starting a Video Series and this is the week!! While I am no “worship ninja” nor am I New Song Cafe, I am very excited about the potential of this new project. My hope is to share new arrangements and songs with you in the coming weeks. However, having never done a teaching video before – it took me a bit longer to get it all edited and pieced together than I originally planned. So, Wednesday of this week this little project will release. Please stop back again THIS week and let me know what you think.
Now to the setlist – If you dropped by last week, you’ll know that our pastor just had surgery on his achilles and is out for 4-6 weeks while he heals (no pun intended). So this week we again had guest speakers in both services that brought good teaching to our church.
I really believe the worship this week was excellent. One of our younger drummers – James – really stepped up this week in the first service and played very solidly. This was one of the first times that I could tell he was acutely aware of the moments happening within the songs and pulling out the perfect feel/fill to correspond. Nicely done James!!
Overall, a very nice weekend of worship. Some deep & weighty moments in worship, a new song from the CompassionArt Project, and leading the second service with my lovely wife made for a great day! Below are the setlists from both services. All the songs are linked to iTunes (for purchase or preview). Enjoy!

2. (G) Hallelujah (Your Love Is Amazing)

Sunday [09.27.09]
We had a good, but different day at Heartland Academy Community Church yesterday. In both services, we had guest speakers (due to our Pastor having just had his achilles operated on this past week) and they were both powerful sermons. Then, at the end of the second service, we prayed over a lovely family from India – the Aldo Vargheses – who are returning home today.
Thanks for stopping by to check out our setlists from yesterday’s services. I have posted both our sets (below) complete with links to the songs -

This post has a brought to you as part of the fun over at Fred McKinnon’s blog carnvial.
Sunday [09.20.09]
Unfortunately I did not get this linked to Fred McKinnon’s site for the Sunday Setlist fun, but I did want to post our set because it really was a great morning.
We replaced a few chords in “Victory In Jesus” to start the morning off and it came out very cool. Later this coming week I’ll post a video that shows how we played it. The rest of the set is listed below. Hope your week was great & be sure to check out what we did, leave a comment, or just look around.

Sunday [09.06.09] – guests galore
This must have been “Bring-Every-Guest-You-Know” Sunday because we had so many visitors in the morning service. We had family visiting us and we even had a visitor/guest musician today on the team. Let me introduce you him. His name is Steve Phillips…..Steve – everybody. Everybody – Steve. Now that you know each other, let me tell you a little about him. Steve is an accomplished saxophone player based out of Kansas City and playing each week at Kansas City Baptist Temple as the artist-in-residence. You can find out more about him on his website or on facebook or by listening to him on iTunes.
Sometimes with so many guests, worship can be a little difficult with people not knowing the songs or just trying to figure out what we are doing – But – worship was really great this morning. We started out a little “old school” on the first song and then just gathered people from there. Steve ended up playing a great intro-solo on the hymn “The Solid Rock” and just added a great feel to the morning. I hope your day was great too. As always, this setlist (see below) is part of the Fred McKinnon Sunday Setlist fun. Feel free to leave a comment, question, or just have a little redonk-u-lous saxophone player envy.

Sunday [08.30.09]
I have taken a little break from Sunday Setlists the past two weeks as I have been busy between studio work, office hours, and leading our worship department. But this week, I’m jumping back in. Unfortunately, during my absence, I missed the opportunity to introduce/welcome one of my friends and mentors, Harold Forbis. He has recently joined in the setlist blogging over at Fred McKinnon’s site, so be sure to stop by Harold’s site to meet him, see his setlists, and check out his teachings as well. Now for the setlist fun…
We started off our Sunday evening service with Let It Rise as a slow chorus (with lots of keys/synth pad) and then kicked it up for a night of high-energy praise! We introduced Shout Praise (from CompassionArt – a great project!) and the congregation jumped right in and learned it quickly. At the end of the song, we accelerated into Shout Of The King and then ended it with a loud shout. It was a powerful moment for our church and it stretched them to continue their praise as the band dropped out. This continued on for a little while (again, definitely a stretching moment for our church family) and from there, we went into a great time of being with God in worship. Below is our setlist for our evening service and all the links will take you to previews of the song. Be sure to check out the video (below) of another church leading “Shout Praise”. It’s a great song and one you may want to consider in your upcoming setlists.
1. (F) Let It Rise
2. (G) Shout Praise
3. (G) Shout Of The King
4. (G) Everlasting God
5. (D) At The Foot Of The Cross
Thanks for stopping by and be sure to say hi, leave a comment, question, or just enjoy reading through our setlist. Be sure to check out Fred’s site and have a great week!

Sunday [08.09.09]
Welcome to another recap of the Sunday setlists, sponsored by Fred McKinnon. Now for the recap – great morning set today! I was encourage because we had our younger band playing together with our new(ish) worship leaders and they did a great job together. Right from the outset they challenged the congregation to truly worship and yet still maintained a real posture of serving.
I have been continuing (due to a large number of visitors in our morning services) to choose songs that are a little older and more familiar for our visitors. What makes this fun for us is now we are beginning to arrange/re-arrange theses songs with chord changes, voicings, and variations in melody lines. Then, in the evening services, we normally “pick up the pace” and put together a set geared towards our church family.
Below is our setlist for the day and each song has a link that will take you to the versions of the songs we attempted today. As always, thanks for stopping by and be sure to say hi, leave a comment, or just look around. I also (like Fred) decided to add a little behind the scenes of our tv studio from the evening service! Enjoy!

Sunday [08.02.09] // No “Little” Thing
I have been absent for a while now, but felt it would be good to get back in the flow of the Sunday Setlists hosted at fredmckinnon.com. I hope this post finds you (and those you are walking with on this journey of faith) well. It might just be me (being sappy), but I have felt the need this week to say “thank you” and “I appreciate/love you” to many of my friends this week. This is how it started…
Last Friday we found out the sad news that our sound man and long-time friend John Emerson had passed away after his bout with a failing liver. I’m quite positive his Sunday Setlist recap would be more than we could even comprehend. Knowing that I was joining in with heaven’s worship was a comforting thought for me today, but still we will dearly miss him.
After sitting back, and looking at John’s life, I realized how much he did just by being consistent week in and week out. This in turn led me to think of the rest of my family, friends, & worship team – to see how incredibly faithful they are to the little details that make up this wonderful thing called life. I know I forget to be thankful for these “little things” (that are truly the most important of things). So, in honor of my friend’s life – would you take a moment, during this week, to thank those around you for being there, for being faithful, and for doing the little things?
To all of you who are reading this – thank you - for your friendship, your service, and your faithfulness to doing what God has set before you. What you are doing is important and it truly makes a difference in the lives of those around you.
Below is a recap of our Sunday sets. You can preview the versions of the songs we did by clicking on the song titles:

Sunday Setlist [05.31.09]
After a beautiful “pink and melon” outdoor wedding yesterday, most of our team (including my fairskinned self) came in today pink-and-melon-sunburned. Everyone was a bit sore, but practice was amazing. Because of the planning and serving that went in to this weekend, we came in without a planned setlist today. For our team, not having a setlist is a very rare thing. So we sat down as a team and quickly put together what you see below.
The morning went smoothly from practice until we lead it live in the service. Our various worship leaders and young worship band did an awesome job of working together and quickly learning the songs – so good job team! Also, our soundman, John, gave us a clean, strong mix this morning and the congregation was all in from the start. It was a great morning at HACC and you can preview the versions of the songs we did by clicking on the song titles.
1. (A) Everlasting God
2. (A) Everyone (Praises)
3. (A) Great Is Thy Faithfulness
–
4. (B) Jesus Paid It All
5. (B) Overcome
Hope your week was great and thanks for stopping by to peruse, say hi, or ask a question. Today’s setlist was brought to you by the letters A, B, the number 5, and Fred McKinnon’s Sunday Setlist fun.
sunday setlist [05.10.09]
Sorry for missing last week, but we are back and had an excellent service today. The church jumped right in at the top and had a lot of energy which made for a great morning. We revamped Open The Eyes Of My Heart and changed a few chords to give it a little more “spice” and had very positive responses to it. (sidenote: this song would go perfectly with Friend Of God (which we did not do) because it has a similar chord structure). For our setlist today, Open The Eyes moved seamlessly into Forever. Also, if you would like to hear a fresh, new version of this song – click here – to open up a link to the creativity that is Russ Hutto.
I ended up leading only 1 song today, which was a lot of fun for me because I was able to help train & backup our newer worship leaders. Today they – Shabaka & Mark – did an excellent job and the response from the church showed me that they are beginning to trust them. ** I will be posting more about this later in the week, so check back to hear about our new training methods and how they are working.**
The rest of the set was equally great, and you can see the rest of it below. Thanks for stopping by and be sure to click on the song titles to listen on iTunes.
1. (E) Open The Eyes Of My Heart
2. (F) Forever
3. (F) Grace Like Rain
-announcements-
4. (C) Great Is Thy Faithfulness
5. (D) Here I Am To Worship
As always, this is a part of the Sunday Setlist craze that is sweeping the nation!
sunday recap [04.26.09]
Welcome to another weekly installment of Sunday setlists as part Fred McKinnon’s blog party. We had a great morning today with another one of our bands in training. The morning was very powerful even though I made a last minute switch and threw in the old song “He Touched Me” by Bill Gaither. I have been singing that song for a few days now and felt it would be a good fit for this week’s morning list and the response was overwhelming.
Our best transition of the morning was from “Glory” to “Need You Here”. Here’s what we did – since “Glory” ends on the 4 chord in E (an A) we all stayed on that chord for a few seconds. Then, while holding a pad sound on the keys, I faded in a rhodes sound underneath and as it was established, the band all kicked into “Need You Here” which just happens to be in A. Just this simple hold and sound change caused a very easy key change for us. Plus, we did not distract our congregation with an abrupt change, but a seemless transition helped this moment to not drop.
This morning we only had 2 lead singers, plus myself and band, which made for nice tight harmonies. Kendra, one of the best part singers I know, lead “Glory” and “He Touched Me”; while Farah Abu Saada, our wonderful soprano this morning, (sidebar: she is also the sister of Ben (from Overland Park, KS)) did an incredible job on “Need You Here”. Overall, the congregation’s response was very strong to the entire set. Below is our setlist and you can click the titles for links to iTunes.
Thanks for swinging by my blog – feel free to leave a comment, ask a question, or just peruse for general merriment.
1. Meet With You (A) by Lamont Hiebert
2. Glory (E) by Reuben Morgan/Hillsong United
3. Need You Here (A) by Reuben Morgan/Hillsong United
4. Your Name (Bb) by Paul Baloche & Glenn Packiam
5. He Touched Me (Bb) by William J. Gaither
(last week I promised to post a song written in our house, but have not done it yet. Be looking for the chart and mp3 to “Consume Me” this week, as we attempt again to get it up. thanks, dj)
sunday setlist [04.19.09]
Welcome to another installment of sunday setlists. As always, this is a part of the worldwide interweb fun from over at Fred McKinnon’s site.
We had a good morning worship service at HACC and our congregation was very responsive. Today saw dead batteries everywhere, tempo fun, and a new song written in-house. Just before going on stage, one of worship leaders’ batteries died (this is a plague upon us lately – possibly due to rechargeables) in his guitar. We all quickly re-battery’ed up and were ready to start this set:
1. God of Wonders (A/B) – good song, we played it a little slow, but the thought behind it was to help our people jump in comfortably and warm-up. Recently, we have been noticing that there are some mornings where we RUN past our congregation at the beginning of service. So, we are trying not to leave anyone behind by entering around a 3 (on a 1 to 10 scale) before we rev the music up to 5 or more.
2. Everyday (B) – our obligatory Hillsong song – ha! Actually, we have not done this song in a long, long time. As such, it was well received and this helped us get moving closer to that 5. Also, major props to our young drummer – James. He found the perfect tempo on this song (which seemed to allude us all during practice) and just played it perfectly.
3. Knowing You (C) – an oldie, but a goodie. Not much more to say on this other than it was a nice worship moment in the set.
4. Consume Me (E) – this was the new song we taught/sang this morning. It was written by one of our newer worship leaders, Jordan. It is encouraging to see our team begin to write and sing from the life they are walking with God. Check back later in the week for the chart and mp3 of this song.
5. Bless The Lord (E) – We went straight out of the chorus of Jordan’s song into this older chorus -
“Bless the Lord, oh my soul
and all that is within me
Bless His holy name”
Then, near the end of singing this song, we key changed up to F, and everyone just seemed to go right UP (no, not that “UP” – but the same basic concept) with the intensity of the song. It was a strong moment and felt as though our earlier “warm-up” helped bring along a large portion of our local house. In my opinion, I think we ended up around a 7 on our little intensity scale (see song #1’s description for the explanation).
Thanks for stopping by and feel free to leave a comment, or question, or just say hi. And if you need more pretty things to look at online, then head over to Fred’s blog to see what other worship leaders and their teams are doing. Have a wonderful Sunday and rest of the week!
sunday setlist [04.12.09]
Thanks for coming stopping by from Fred McKinnon’s blog. Here’s the setlist we put together from our Easter morning:
(click the song titles to hear samples of the songs)1. There Is A Redeemer (B/E) – We started the day very differently than we normally do. We began this worship song while everyone was still coming in and being seated. I sang the first verse of this song, and then my son, Jesse, sang the chorus. He sang it beautifully, and then we key changed into E and sang the chorus together. Hopefully we conveyed a small picture of the Father and Son and the importance of the power of their relationship on this Easter Sunday.
2. My Redeemer Lives (Hillsong kids version) w/ My Savior Lives (E) – As we began this, our kid’s choir came in from the side and helped my wife, Felicity, to lead us all in worship. Then, we kicked into the bridge from My Savior Lives and finished off by singing the chorus from My Redeemer Lives. This transitioned nicely into the next song.
3. God So Loved The World (E) - This was another song we found from Hillsong Kids’ CD Tell The World. This is an older Hillsong song, but it went very well and just restates in its lyrics, what John 3:16 tells us – that “…God so loved the world that He gave His only Son…” This was a very powerful moment as we finished this song and then sang again the chorus of There Is A Redeemer to close out this first half of our worship service.
4. Jesus Paid It All & Before The Throne (B) – Before I describe this part of the service, I’ll just say that we were looking to include some hymns this morning so that we covered the full spectrum of what helps our multi-generational congregation worship. So we included these “modernized hymns”. One of our altos, Molly, led Jesus Paid It All and did a great job with it. I picked up the new bridge and then went directly into the chorus of Before The Throne. If you have not yet tried this song, you should at least consider it. The verses are pure hymn truth-y goodness followed by a compellingly, simple chorus.
This morning was a beautiful time of remembrance and celebration in our church. Personally, I was moved to be able to sing with my young son and lead our church in worship together. It was a powerful moment for me as a father – looking ahead to the day when Jesse will fully come to realize the Truth of whom we sang about this Easter morning. This was our worship service – how was yours?
sunday setlist [04.05.09]
Sunday Setlist – 04.05.09
Well, as you can see – I am working on getting this blog up and fully-functioning, but I thought I would at least post a Sunday setlist. We had a good palm Sunday morning at Heartland Academy Community Church. Initially it seemed that people were a little scarce this morning, but then I remembered that a large group from our congregation is on a missions trip to Egypt.
So here’s the rundown today -
1. evermore (g) – One of our other worship leaders that we are training led this Hillsong semi-oldie. It is a great tune to play. I love the half-time bridge on this song because you can really build it for a nice worship moment, or use it to contrast the uptempo chorus. People really jumped into this song and it worked well as it lead into…
2. surrender (g) – I remember when the Surrender cd first came out with classic worship songs like You Are My King, All Who Are Thirsty, Hallelujah Your Love Makes Me Sing. We did this a little more upbeat than normal, but it worked well and we used it as a medley with our 3rd song.
3. i surrender all (c) – This was lead by Kathie, one of our altos and she did a great job leading this. Our church really enjoys hymns, and this one was no exception. Rich in theology and a good conclusion to our set before we stopped and did announcements.
4. he is exalted (g) – Ridden with mental mistakes by me, this still managed to be a great moment for us. We normally do this song a little like Shane & Shane; however, we did not schedule an acoustic guitar player (mistake #1) and we did not have another guy to sing the cool harmonies this song provides (mistake #2). Regardless of my lack of foresight, the congregation knew this song well and was able to get past my cutting to just voices (mistake #3) and it feeling like all hope for rhythm was lost. Again, this just helped solidify for me, that worship is not so much about my mistakes and shortcomings as it is about His greatness. I was glad for being able to make a joyful NOISE.
5. jesus, lover of my soul (g) – we finished the set with this song and then spontaneously cut over to the chorus of I Could Sing Of Your Love Forever. It took a few moments to build, but we ended up having a great time of worship with this song.
On a little different note, every Sunday morning, we are attempting to train our younger, less experienced musicians. Our goal is to help them gain confidence and experience. This morning was no exception, and I was very impressed with their ability to keep up, even with the multiple mistakes (by me, not them) and song changes. This morning was a very good sign that we are growing and getting better in our skills and our ability to lead worship with our various instruments. Good work team!
Thanks for checking out our set. Feel free to to leave a comment, ask a question, or just peruse this almost-put-together website. And, be sure to swing by Fred’s blog to see what other teams & churches were singing this weekend.
